Conference Themes
Approved panels and paper presentations for the Fifth APISA Congress shall focus on four major themes, each of which shall be seen in the light of regional integration:
Transnational governance
This theme will discuss emerging trends and patterns of transnational activities. Concurrently, the panel will also explore future challenges of transnational cooperation among states and/or nonstate actors. There are several sub-themes:
- Global governance
- Regionalization/regional integration and institutions
- Interactions of regional institutions with international actors
- International economic regimes
- Transnational security
- Global civil society
- International law and jurisdiction
- Global media
- Transnationalism
- Post-conflict state-building
Challenges to the nation state
Regional integration undoubtedly requires and leads to fundamental social, political and economic changes that affect each of the involved nation states. This theme will identify such changes and their implications on national development:
- Democracy, civil society and elections
- Ethnic and social conflicts
- Rule of law, constitutional reform
- Crises of legitimacy and national identity
- Natural disasters and environmental challenges
- Dimensions of security (human vs. national)
- Social movements and civil society
- Cross border issues and migration
- Educational system reform
- Corruption
- Human trafficking, narcotics trade and organized crime
- Paramilitarism and privatization of security
Political economy and development
This theme will look at the political economy of transnational regimes and address issues related to national and transnational development:
- Wealth disparities
- Rural development
- Food security
- Economic crises
- Corporate social responsibility
- Regional investment
- Economic interdependencies
- National development strategies
- Aid industry and transnational development interventions
Transnational society and culture
This theme will deal with cultural and social issues in a transnational context:
- Religious, linguistic and cultural aspects of identity
- Transnational intimacy
- Diffusion of norms (sustainability, human rights, democracy etc.)
- Geographies of violence/spatial dynamics of conflicts
- Social and cultural policies
